The title of this DVD is perfect for what you get- At home with expert teachers in their studio and they teach the basics from an artist's point of view and vocabulary, rather than a traditional quilter's point of view or vocabulary. This info provides more questions to ask yourself when you get stuck in the design process, and more options to consider for making it work out as you had thought or better. The teachers take an artist's point of view and vocabulary. For example, they seldom referred to the piece they were working on as a quilt, instead it was a composition. ART! I liked watching while hearing about how they used the artists decision making process in terms of the lay-out or composition, using design principles an artists uses to make choices and make changes so that their piece has the final look they are aiming for. The compositions are multi-faceted and there are many choices to make. Nothing is right or wrong, but your vision is the goal. There are many design principles to consider, they show examples of each, and then show finished compositions or combinations of them. However they are quite simple examples, not intense art quilts that would hang in an exhibit. If you are a pattern person, the DVD will not fill that need. They are describing making your own designs, and offer suggestions for where to get inspiration and keep it comingto you.I recommend this DVD for beginners of art quilt making to learn the basics of design principles for designing and making an artistic composition from your fabric. Methods shown were fusing, free motion quilting and drawing for a realistic appliqued adaption of a still life. The DVD version was a far better teacher than the book version, from which this DVD came. I also enjoyed the teacher's personalities, it was just like being in a girlfriend's studio.
